FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container), bulk bag, ton bag, jumbo bag — you'll see all four terms used interchangeably by suppliers and buyers. They all refer to the same product: a large, flexible bag made of woven polypropylene (PP) fabric, built to move bulk material that's too large for small-format packaging.

Basic Construction

An FIBC bag has three main parts: the body (woven PP fabric, sewn together), the lifting loops (designed for forklift or crane handling), and an optional liner (a plastic film insert for moisture and dust protection). Unlike an ordinary plastic sack, the fabric strength and stitching on an FIBC bag are engineered to a specific load requirement — it's not just sewn together at random.

Common Types

By construction method, FIBC bags generally fall into a few categories:

  • U-Panel: Made from one U-shaped panel plus two side panels. The most common style on the market — solid average strength, relatively lower cost.
  • Circular (Round): Woven as a continuous tube with no side seams, giving more consistent load-bearing performance, though it uses fabric less efficiently.
  • 4-Panel: Built from four fabric panels into a square body. Holds its shape well when stacked, good for warehouses that need tidy, uniform stacking.

Loops and Spout Design

Loop count is typically 1, 2, or 4 (cross-corner). The number and stitching method directly affect how the bag is handled and its rated load. Top and bottom spouts come in a few standard configurations — open top, skirt top, or discharge spout/funnel bottom — depending on whether your line pours material in, fills through a chute, or connects directly to discharge equipment. This is usually determined by your existing filling and discharge setup.

Typical Uses

Because a single FIBC bag can carry anywhere from 500 kg to 2,000 kg, it's a practical way to cut down on repetitive small-bag handling and manual labor. Common applications include:

  • Construction: sand, cement, dry mortar, fly ash, and other bulk powders
  • Agriculture: grain, feed, fertilizer, organic growing media
  • Plastics: recycled plastic pellets, engineering resins, masterbatch
  • Chemicals and mining: various powder and granular raw materials
